From Xi'an's Terracotta Army west to Dunhuang's desert grottoes and Zhangye's Rainbow Mountains — China's Silk Road by high-speed rail.

Day 1

Xi'an — the eastern gate

Terracotta Warriors.

Day: Terracotta Army + Muslim Quarter food crawl. Evening: City Wall bike loop at dusk.

Day 2

Xi'an → Zhangye

Long rail leg west.

Day: High-speed train to Zhangye (~6 hr) along the Hexi Corridor. Evening: Arrive Zhangye; Giant Buddha Temple if time allows.

Day 3

Zhangye Danxia

Rainbow Mountains at sunset.

Afternoon: Zhangye Danxia Geopark — platforms 1 and 4 for sunset colors. Evening: Overnight Zhangye.

Day 4

Zhangye → Dunhuang

Deeper into the desert.

Day: Rail to Dunhuang (~4–5 hr). Evening: Shazhou night market — donkey-meat noodles.

Day 5

Mogao Grottoes

1,000 years of cave murals.

Morning: Mogao Grottoes (pre-booked A-ticket, guided caves). Afternoon: Rest through the desert heat. Evening: Mingsha dunes + Crescent Lake at sunset, camel ride.

Day 6

Yumen / Jiayuguan option

The last fort of the Great Wall.

Day: Optional side trip to Jiayuguan Fort (western terminus of the Ming Great Wall) or a slow desert day. Evening: Prepare for return.

Day 7

Return

Fly or rail back east.

Day: Fly out from Dunhuang (DNH) to Xi'an / Beijing / Shanghai, or overnight sleeper train.
