Dunhuang was the great Silk Road caravan gateway between China and Central Asia. The Mogao Grottoes hold 1,000 years of Buddhist cave murals and sculptures (UNESCO, timed-entry only). Just outside town, the Mingsha singing sand dunes wrap around the improbable Crescent Moon Spring. Reach it by bullet train from Lanzhou/Xi'an or fly into Dunhuang (DNH).
Entry is strictly timed and capped. Book the A-ticket (¥238, includes two intro films + ~8 caves with a guide) on the official Mogao reservation mini-program up to a month ahead — peak-summer slots sell out. A cheaper emergency B-ticket exists but shows fewer caves.
Do the Mingsha Dunes + Crescent Lake in late afternoon: rent orange sand-boots at the gate, ride a camel over the ridge, and stay for sunset. A night market on Shazhou Road serves Dunhuang donkey-meat noodles (驴肉黄面) afterward.
