Why visit Pingyao

Pingyao is the best-preserved ancient walled city in China — a UNESCO site where the entire town inside the 6 km Ming wall is a living museum of Qing-dynasty courtyard homes, temples, and China's first draft banks (piaohao). Cars are banned inside the walls. Stay in a converted courtyard guesthouse and explore on foot. It's a 3.5-hour bullet train from Beijing or a short hop from Taiyuan.

The all-in ticket

A single combo ticket (~¥125, valid 3 days) covers the city wall plus ~20 sights including Rishengchang (China's first draft bank), temples, and old official residences. Buy it at any main gate. Climbing the wall at the North Gate gives the best rooftop panorama.

Side trip: Wang Family Courtyard

40 min away, the Wang Family Courtyard (王家大院) is a vast Qing merchant mansion complex — often called 'the Forbidden City of Shanxi'. Combine with the Zhangbi Underground Castle tunnels.
