Why visit Guangzhou

Guangzhou is where Cantonese food and Lingnan culture live at their deepest. It's also China's biggest trade city (the Canton Fair) and the most bilingual second-tier city, with 90 min bullet train from Hong Kong.

Yum cha basics

Guangzhou Restaurant (广州酒家) on Wenchang Rd is a dim-sum institution. Order har gow, siu mai, char siu bao, cheung fun, and steamed spare ribs. Yum cha is a morning ritual — arrive by 09:30.

Getting there

  • Baiyun Airport (CAN) is 40 min from downtown by metro.
  • Guangzhou South (GZS) high-speed rail: 50 min from Hong Kong West Kowloon; passport-only entry lane at the station.
